ALT Linux創(chuàng)始于2001年，由兩個(gè)大的俄羅斯自由軟件計(jì)劃合并而來(lái)。2008年它成為了一個(gè)大的組織，從事自由軟件的開(kāi)發(fā)和部署、文檔和技術(shù)資料撰寫(xiě)、用戶(hù)支持及定制產(chǎn)品開(kāi)發(fā)工作。ALT Linux面向不同的目的生產(chǎn)不同類(lèi)型的發(fā)行。這包括面向家庭、辦公計(jì)算機(jī)、企業(yè)服務(wù)器的各種桌面發(fā)行，廣泛包含各種開(kāi)發(fā)工具和文檔的通用發(fā)行，認(rèn)證產(chǎn)品，面向教育機(jī)構(gòu)的專(zhuān)用發(fā)行，以及面向低端計(jì)算機(jī)的發(fā)行。ALT Linux擁有自己的基礎(chǔ)開(kāi)發(fā)設(shè)施和軟件倉(cāng)庫(kù)，稱(chēng)為Sisyphus，它為所有不同類(lèi)型的ALT Linux提供基礎(chǔ)。

The ALT Linux development team has announced the availability of the first beta release of ALT Linux 5.0, a Russian general-purpose distribution for servers and workstations. Some of the new features in this release include: choice of two desktop environments - KDE 4 and GNOME; optimised for office deployment, with Internet, electronic mail and office suite of applications; integration with server on many levels, including centralised authentication, virtual containers and file storage; support for interaction between virtual private networks; centralised update mechanism for servers and workstations; convenient web-based system administration.
